TiVo Series 2 Dual Tuner (DT) – TCD649080

You’ve all probably seen that the new Series 2 TiVo DT has been announced and is available for sale on TiVo’s site (as part of a bundle with a service agreement, and, so far, only via a special email link sent to current TiVo users). We expect to have the boxes here at WeaKnees soon, although we don’t have a firm date yet.

We’ve been getting flooded with questions about the new units. First, a brief description of the new units and what they can and can’t do, then some info about our plans for them.

The new units can record two channels at once – that’s the big change. There are some limitations in how this works, basically due to the fact that most people who’d want to do this have cable TV. So that’s the most important point about these boxes: one of the two sources for dual-tuner recording must be analog cable. You can’t record two satellite channels, or two premium cable channels that have be to descrambled or unecrypted with a cable box (digital or analog). If you don’t have a cable box, both channels being recorded can be analog cable channels, but in any event, at least one must be. And an interesting note here is that antennas are not supported here – you must get the transmission through a cable (in most locations, for a nominal fee of about $10/month your local cable company will provide ‘lifeline’ cable service of the broadcast channels through the coax cable, and this works fine).

Really, the only other change from previous units is that these have an on-board ethernet jack. So if you’re connecting your unit to a wired home network, you don’t need a USB-ethernet adapter anymore. If you want to go wireless, you still need a USB 802.11 adapter (b or g – make sure it’s compatible).

These units will be available in two configurations from TiVo: 80 hour and 180 hour. Initially, the 80 hour unit will be the only one available, at a price (without service) of $249. Lifetime won’t be an available option.

As far as upgrading these units, we don’t have final information yet, but we’ll post here as soon as we do.

TiVo Service Roundup – Everything you’ve ever wanted to know . . .

There have been a lot of changes to the structure and pricing of TiVo service over the years. Here we’ll explain where it all lays out today, with some of the history where it affects the current situation.

DirecTV TiVo DVRs

DirecTV charges a DVR fee of $5.99/month to customers with one or more DVRs on their DirecTV account. You also pay a receiver/lease fee of $4.99/month per DirecTV receiver, after the first receiver on the account. If you are running an HD TiVo and want the HD channels, that’s another $10.99/month.

If you have a DirecTV Premiere package, the DVR fee is included in the umbrella that you’re paying for, so you won’t also have the $5.99 monthly charge. So if you have this package, all you pay to add a DVR is the hardware cost, once.

Once upon a time, DirecTV and TiVo offered lifetime TiVo service for DirecTV units. This is long gone, but if you had it, it’s now part of your DirecTV account, and, unlike lifetime on standalone units, it covers all of the DVRs on your account, and you can remove/replace old DVRs from your account without affecting the status of this lifetime coverage. If you close your DirecTV account, however, you’ll never get this back.

Standalone TiVo DVRs without DVD burners

Monthly service on TiVo units is $12.95/month for the first unit on the account, and $6.95/month for each additional. TiVo has some bundles on their site where they basically raise your monthly fee, commit you to a longer time period, and then give you the unit free.

Until recently, these units were eligible for lifetime service. TiVo has stopped selling lifetime service for these units. There are ways to get this (eBay, WeaKnees, gift cards) but by and large, if you want a unit with no monthly fee, you should consider a Humax combo unit, below.

TiVo DVD Combo Units

The monthly service for these units is the same as that for the standalones: $12.95/month for the first unit on the account, and $6.95/month for additional units on the same account. But these units are still eligible to get lifetime service.

At $299, lifetime service is a pretty good deal, at least for the first unit on your account. This covers the monthly fee for just over 23 months – after that, your service is essentially free, and, since service travels with the box for these, your unit is worth more for potential resale.

To purchase lifetime service for a Humax unit, you need to call TiVo. Lifetime can’t be purchased online at this point.

Lifetime – the last 24 hours (or so)

OK – we’re getting down to the wire here. If you still want lifetime service, you MUST get two things done before tomorrow night:

-order a standalone TiVo or a DVD TiVo

-watch your email. We’ll email you your TiVo Serial Number and the other information you’ll need to purchase your lifetime service before the cut-off

Both must be done by 7 PM Pacific time on April 15, 2006. So make sure to do the first part enough in advance that we can email you your information for the second part.

TiVo Wins Patent Suit Against Dish

After a pretty quick trial, TiVo was awarded almost $74 million in its patent suit against EchoStar, the parent company of Dish Network. Now, TiVo may seek an injunction to keep EchoStar from selling DVRs. Pretty big news here in the DVR world. More details here:

TiVo and DirecTV Commit for 3 More Years!

Announced this morning, DirecTV has completed an agreement with TiVo to continue to provide service to combo DirecTV/TiVo DVRs for at least three years beyond the current agreement’s end date at the end of 2007. This means that DirecTV will continue to support (although not necessarily to sell) TiVo DVRs until 2010.

This isn’t too much of a surprise – DirecTV still supports UltimateTV boxes that haven’t been made for many years. But this will allay concerns that anyone should have in purchasing a TiVo over the home-grown R15 that DirecTV has released.

In any event, it’s nice to have a firm commitment in place, and some guarantee of a revenue stream for TiVo.
