This issue deserves a little note since it has an unexpected impact that I haven’t seen reported elsewhere, and that I’ve personally experienced: 7.2.2 is incompatible with certain wired ethernet adapters, and therefore, if you have one, you won’t get 7.2.2.

But there’s a glitch. If you got 7.2.2 before TiVo was aware of the issue, then you basically just lose connectivity. In my case, I signed up on the priority list, then I was out of town. So by the time my TiVo started complaining about a lack of guide data, I wasn’t here to do anything about it.

So what did I do? First I tried connecting via phone line, assuming that I would get a slight update that would fix the problem, but that wasn’t the case. So I scrounged up another, compatible adapter (one of the benefits of being in the TiVo world is having tons of extra junk around) and I’m working again.

But then I found that when I wanted to show my vacation photos from my trip, I couldn’t, because TiVo Desktop isn’t compatible with my new Intel-based MacBook Pro. Such is life on the cutting edge of technology . . .

As of March 1, the DIRECTV rebates for existing customers have ended, but prices on HD TiVos are down by about $100. New DTV customers will still be able to get rebates – details from DIRECTV are still coming.

For standalone TiVos, and DVD/TiVo combos, TiVo has extended the $150 rebate for another two months. More details and links are on our rebates page.

If you’re looking to buy a DIRECTV DVR (R10 or HR10), you should be aware that the rebate from DIRECTV is ending soon. The rebate expires 2/28/06 (you have to purchase, but not necessarily receive, install, or activate by that date). To the best of our knowledge, this rebate will not be replaced by a new rebate for existing customers.

For several reasons, WeaKnees will (at least for now) stop selling the DirecTV DVR model R15. We will continue to sell all other DirecTV hardware: the TiVo-based R10 (in all of its configurations), the HD TiVo HR10-250 (several configurations), the D10/D11, and the H20.

We have had many, many complaints about these boxes, and many returns. Our customer base is made up of people generally interested in and accustomed to TiVo DVRs, and this machine just falls short. In addition, DirecTV has increased the price to retailers on this unit (and all hardware, as of January 1) so it is simply no longer economically feasible to suppport it, considering the rate of returns. We just can’t put our reputation behind the R15. Unless and until there are changes either in the features or economics or stability or all of these, we can’t offer this unit.
