Upgraded TiVo Premieres are Shipping!

As mentioned in an earlier post, we’ve been working hard on getting the new TiVo Premiere HD upgraded in a rock-solid configuration, and, after much more testing, we’re happy to say it’s a complete success! We even have a new maximum capacity available: 4 Terabytes – that’s enough storage for up to 640 hours of HD recording.

We’re able to upgrade both the TiVo Premiere and the TiVo Premiere XL to the same capacities, thanks to lots of new code inside these units. So you can get a 2 TB internal drive in either one, or you can get either with a 2 TB internal and a 2 TB external if you want it.

TiVo Premiere Phone Adapter is in Stock

OK, OK, this may not be as newsworthy as info on our upcoming 4 TB TiVo Premiere, but for those without full time internet access, the TiVo phone line adapter is the only way to get a Premiere or Premiere XL running and full of guide data.

This is a simple USB-modem dongle that reminds me a lot of the dongles that Apple made right after they first came out with their first laptops that didn’t have internal modems. And it basically accomplishes the same thing: providing an inexpensive solution for those without broadband access.

Now, as TiVo makes clear, a lot of the functionality of the TiVo Premiere line is lost without a broadband connection. In fact, as you will learn if you install one of these, the TiVo Premiere can’t be used with HD menus if you’re using a phone line connection (as of this writing, anyway). One of the steps (omitted in TiVo’s online instructions) is to switch from HD to SD menus – that’s required if using the phone line adapter.

Setup is as simple as could be – just as if the modem were built into the motherboard. The TiVo presents numbers and tests them.

Whatever the case, if you’re reading this, you’re likely enough of a TiVo fan to know that the TiVo Premiere started shipping a little over a week ago. However, due to some changes in the way and location that data is stored on the Premiere, upgrading the box was not the same as earlier models.

Just as with the TiVoHD and TiVoHD XL, new tools had to be developed. Fortunately, we have some very talented folks behind the scenes (and a hearty, warm and huge thank you goes out to the one largely responsible!), and once again, we have an upgrade solution up and running.

We haven’t put the kits up on the site quite yet because we want to do some additional testing, but the 4TB kit consists of a 2TB inside the TiVo and a 2TB external. We expect to have 2TB internal kits available for both the Premiere and the XL, and likely will have a 1TB and 1.5TB kit to replace the 320gb in a Premiere.

And, of course, we’ll have a variety of complete units for sale soon, topping out with a 4 TB TiVo Premiere XL.

TiVo Premiere & New Glo Remote Shipping Early!

Our shipment of TiVo Premiere units is heading toward Los Angeles and we will be shipping units out to all of our TiVo Premiere pre-order customers on 3/28, a day earlier than planned (thanks, TiVo!).

In addition, starting 3/26, we will be shipping the new TiVo Premiere XL Glo Remote.

This remote is similar to the Series3 Glo Remote, but has no DVR1/2 switch (used to control two DVRs independently using the same remote), but does have A, B, C & D color-coded buttons used in the new high-def TiVo Premiere user-interface.

The new Series4 Glo Remote IS backward compatible to all TiVos that use a peanut-shaped remote, but from what understand, the A, B, C & D buttons will have no functionality in the older-model TiVo DVRs.
