The Largest TiVo on Earth? The 8TB TiVo Roamio!

If you’ve been following the details the last couple of weeks, you’ve first seen us announce 2TB and 3TB upgrades for the Roamio and Roamio Plus, followed by 7TB upgrades (consisting of a 3TB internal and 4TB external). Yesterday we announced 4TB internal upgrades for all three units.

Today we reach the end of the upgrade train, with a two-drive, 8TB DVR (4TB internal / 4TB external). Until Western Digital or Seagate launches a 5TB drive, we’re stuck here at a measly 8TB. (We have come a long way from the 13.6GB Quantum QuickView in the original HDR110!)

The 8TB Roamio, Plus or Pro records up to 1,281 hours in high definition or up to 8,830 hours in standard definition. I’m struggling to come up with the appropriately-staggering example, but try these: If you set a 8TB Roamio Pro to record six channels, non-stop, it would run almost 9 days without running out of space. If you wanted to record just one channel, you could run 24/7 for 53 days. That’s a lot of C-SPAN!

We’re hoping to start selling this monster soon. When we do, you’ll find it on our main TiVo Roamio page. Stay tuned!

4TB TiVo Roamio Upgrades Coming Soon

We continue to make progress in getting higher capacity drives into Roamio devices. Our 7TB Roamio (3TB internal; 4TB external) continues to chug along, recording nonstop without fail. We also have (single, internal drive) 2TB and 3TB upgraded Roamio TiVo DVRs on the website, working flawlessly, as well as Roamio hard drive kits, Roamio Plus drives, and Roamio Pro TiVo upgrades. Our kits now come with the latest TiVo software–no long waits for software updates during guided setup! And, of course, kits come with tools and instructions (including all 3 tools required for Roamio upgrades).

The real news, though, is that we have a single 4TB upgrade kit running on each of the three Roamio platforms. A single 4TB yields 637HD hours, see below.

4TB kits, as well as complete units (Roamio, Roamio Plus and Roamio Pro) will be shipping soon. Stay tuned!

What’s next on the list? That’s right: 8TB! 4TB internal and 4TB external.

Crossing the 4 TB Barrier – How About 7 TB?

We’re working hard on getting the TiVo Roamio upgraded beyond its current 3 TB limit. We’ve successfully been upgrading the Premiere line to 4 TB for a few years, so that’s been the largest DVR around.

Currently, we’ve got a 7 TB unit up and running. Not sure how soon we’ll have kits for it, but we’re pounding away at it to make sure it’s stable.

And, as soon as we’re certain it’s stable, you’ll be able to get 1120 hours of HD in your Roamio . . .

TiVo Upgrade Kits for the Series5 Roamio

We’re happy to announce that we now have TiVo Upgrade Kits available for the TiVo Series5 Roamio DVRs.

Today we are releasing 2 and 3 Terabyte upgrade kits for the Roamio and Roamio Plus models. These are fully internal upgrades based on Western Digital’s line of AV drives, like the drives TiVo uses in the Plus and Pro models.

You can find kits here, by model:

TiVo Roamio TCD846500 (base model) upgrade kits

TiVo Roamio Plus TCD848000 upgrade kits

The 2 TB kits provide for about 320 hours of HD recording space, and the 3 TB kits provide for about 475 hours of HD recording space.

Here’s a screenshot of a 3 TB kit in a TiVo Roamio Plus:

We are still working on larger and two-drive upgrade kits, so if you think you’ll need more than 3 TB total, we’ll likely have something for you soon!

More Misc FAQs About the TiVo Roamio

We’ve posted a list of Roamio questions on the blog, and we have a Roamio FAQ on our site. Now here are some more random questions and other things we’ve learned about the TiVo Roamio Series5 DVRs.

Is the TiVo Slide Remote compatible with the TiVo Roamio?

Yes! It sure is, we’re happy to say.

Is this interface really that much faster.

Yes. It really is. It’s significant.

How do I copy my Season Passes from my other DVRs to my new Roamio?

Before TiVo reworked their website, you could go to tivo.com/spm – “SPM” is for Season Pass Manager – and copy lists of Season Passes from one unit to another. With the redesign of the website, we can’t find that. We hope someone will find it and post a link in the comments!

And we got a comment with the link, that works: https://www.tivo.com/apps/spm.do

How do I change the remote to go to IR or RF mode?

TiVo + C puts the remote in IR and TiVo + D puts it back in RF. More info on the Roamio remote info page.

Does this unit have the 30 Second Skip?

Yes. You can use the 30 second skip on this unit. That said, the 30 second slip is enabled by default. But if you want the true skip, you can do it.

I hate the video preview window!

OK – that one was me (Michael). I hate it. Fortunately, you can turn it off here in the settings, always. Like on the Premiere line, you can disable it per-occurrence by pressing the Slow button on the remote. But there’s also an option to turn it off permanently (I didn’t have a chance to check a Premiere to see if this has been added in a software update over the years). I’m very happy to have peace and quiet in the menus.
