We suspected that this was coming and now it is official. You can now purchase a Series3 TiVo through 1/31/07 and transfer your lifetime service through 3/2/07. New terms and conditions are here. Happy New Year!

Previously, we reported that TiVo was permitting owners of DIRECTV DVRs to transfer lifetime service from those units to Series3 boxes.
Today TiVo changed the rules (again), and is now prohibiting transfers from DIRECTV TiVos that have lifetime service. We have many theories as to why they did it, but suffice it to say that for now, only standalone TiVos are eligible for the transfer.
A New Year, A New Rebate
As expected, TiVo is back with a new rebate for standard definition units (single tuner, dual tuner, and DVD single tuner units). The rebate amounts are the same as in the previous round: $180 for the dual tuner and DVD units, $220 for the single tuner units (if you can find one).
No rebate works on the Series3 HD TiVo and we don’t expect one anytime soon.

VIP Transfer
And now the deadline for the VIP transfer is in the next stage. You would have had to purchase your TiVo by midnight, last night, to qualify. Now you must transfer your service by 1/31/07.
Last Series3 order of 2006 for WeaKnees: 11:48 PM – 60 hour unit, shipping to Alameda, California.
It’s 12/29 now, so that means you have two days to purchase a Series3 TiVo to qualify for the lifetime VIP transfer. To recap, if you have lifetime TiVo service on ANY box (now both DirecTV TiVos and standalone TiVos) then you can pay TiVo $199 to move the lifetime to a Series3 unit. In the case of standalone TiVos, they will also give you one year of service on the older box (not clear what happens for DirecTV TiVos).
The deadline for the purchase is 12/31/06 – but you don’t need to receive the unit by then, just purchase it by then. Then you need to complete the transfer by 1/31/07.
With rebates, we’ve all grown to assume that when one rebate period ends, another immediately starts. But since this is the first round of this service, we have no idea if the program will renew. Frankly, we suspect it won’t.
