SDV (Switched Digital Video) Debuting on TiVos in New Jersey

It’s finally happening, Switched Digital Video is live – at least, a bit.

A user in New Jersey with Comcast cable service received a letter from Comcast. He followed up, got an SDV tuning adapter, and he’s using it. Many of the details still aren’t clear, but what is clear is that the TiVo supports the adapter, and the cable company supports TiVos using the adapter.

The customer, jtmal0723, started a thread at TiVoCommunity with details. He’s also posted a picture of his Cisco SDV adapter.

We’re watching this closely, and we’re very happy to see that this hurdle has been overcome technically.

TiVo has added a large amount of information and new screenshots to their SDV page.

Thanks to TiVoBlog for the original post!

EDIT: Regarding this specific hardware, Cisco has a product information sheet here. And this is a picture of the back of the unit. The cable from the wall passes through, and the USB connection attaches to the TiVo.

Another Playstation 3 Upgrade Option

While our PS3 upgrade kits have definitely been a hot item, our kit offerings had one big obstacle. Customers have been wanting a way to do the upgrade at home, without sending us the unit, but with a way to transfer their data to the upgrade hard drive. We now have that option available!

See our PS3 data transfer area for D-I-Y upgrade options that allow you to keep your data intact. If you have a USB drive, you can use our regular kit. If you need a USB drive, we now have a kit with a loaner.

Please note that any games or other items that will not copy to a backup will not survive this procedure.

Transfer TiVo Videos to iPod and iPhone

This is definitely a hot topic, and we get questions about how to make these transfers all the time. We also get tons of spammers clogging up our forums with their posts on how to do it – and where to purchase their software (and, yes, we delete those threads as fast as we can).

But, in the end, TiVo.com has the best tutorials on how to make these transfers, so we recommend that you just see their pages for the best information. Links are at the bottom.

Some notes about what’s required for this to work:

  • You do need to purchase software to make these conversions work. For the PC, you need TiVo Desktop Plus ($25) and for the Mac, you need Roxio Toast 9 Titanium ($75).
  • You need to have your TiVo and your computer on the same internal network. If you need hardware for that, see our TiVo networking parts area for anything you might need.

Then, you just follow the steps in TiVo’s tutorials:

WeaKnees Debuts Playstation 3 Upgrade Kits

We’re now selling upgrade kits for the Sony Playstation 3. See our PS3 Upgrade Kit page. We can put up to 320 GB of space in a Playstation 3, enabling users to save more downloaded content! Now that Sony has announced the ability to download content online, the relatively small hard drives in PS3s will get filled fast. We’ve got a way out!

We have two paths to the PS3 upgrade, one being D-I-Y and one where customers send us the unit for our complete service.

The first option for do-it-yourselfers includes the replacement hard drive, pre-loaded USB flash drive, tools, and complete instructions with pictures. The process takes less than an hour, and most of the time involves using the PS3 controller on-screen. With our pre-loaded flash drive, we’ve overcome the problems that many do-it-yourselfers run into, and customers’ units will be updated to the newest version of the PS3 software in the process. And if you’ve installed a WeaKnees kit in your DVR before, you know the benefit of our instructions and phone and online support through email, and through our new Playstation 3 upgrade forum area.

Our second option is a complete service where customers send in their Playstation 3 console. We then backup all the data, install our new drive, and restore the data to the replacement drive. So this way, all data that existed on the game console before is still intact afterward. It’s totally seamless.

Full information is on our Playstation 3 Upgrade page.
