3TB Upgrades Now Available for DIRECTV GENIE (HR34)!

We’ve just launched the DIRECTV HR34 (Genie) HD DVR with a whopping 3TB drive inside. With this capacity, you can record up to 720 hours in HD. Put another way, you can record nonstop for up to 30 days in HD and never run out of space. Or, if you want to take advantage of the Genie’s five tuners, you can record five channels, nonstop for up to six straight days.

If you already have a Genie and need, er, want, more space, you can ship the DIRECTV HR34 to us and we can install a 3TB upgrade drive for you. If you’d like, we can also copy all of your existing programming onto a new 3TB drive, giving you a lot more free space without losing what you’ve already recorded. (I know this previous sentence will generate questions, so I’ll answer at least one now: It is currently impossible to move recordings from one DVR to another; the copy will only work if you have a Genie and we are copying from its existing drive to a larger one.)

Rebooting DIRECTV TiVo DVRs…Problem Resolved

We’ve received reports that DIRECTV has resolved the nationwide problem of DIRECTV TiVo units rebooting.  We have posted many times about the issue. We notified DIRECTV’s engineers. The Consumerist posted a story quoting DIRECTV as saying that this impacted a “small number” of customers.

Judging by the volume of phone calls we have been receiving, it’s a VOCAL bunch, if a small one.  I would guess that we’ve received an average of 300 calls per day that this issue was ongoing. Small potatoes for DIRECTV’s call center, but it slaughtered our phone system here at weaKnees. Sorry to all of those who called and got “please check the blog!”

Anyway, the good news is that DIRECTV has reportedly resolved the matter, so everyone can watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade without commercial interruption AND “Welcome, Powering Up” every 20 minutes!

Rebooting DIRECTV TiVo DVRs – Update

Yesterday, we posted about an ongoing problem with standard definition DIRECTV TiVo DVRs rebooting multiple times per day. After multiple emails and calls to DIRECTV, we finally received a response indicating that the engineering department is (now) aware of the problem and is working on a solution. We hope it will be soon, but we don’t have any idea how long it will take to fix. We’ll keep our fingers crossed!
