TiVo today is releasing a new product for their HD DVR line: the TiVo HD XL. WeaKnees expects to have this unit in stock today, September 4, for immediate shipment, for $599. See our TiVo HD XL ordering area.
This unit is an enhanced version of the TiVo HD that was released just over a year ago. The main improvements in this unit are:
- Larger hard drive (one Terabyte) to record up to 150 hours of HD.
- THX certification, like the original Series3 TiVo.
- Backlit, learning remote instead of the standard remote.
- HDMI cable is included.
The list price of the new unit is $599.99.
The less expensive TiVo HD will still be available at $299, and we will have both models available with expanded hard drive space.
We will have the TiVo HD XL unit available with two terabytes of capacity for $899 also!

Question can someone explain what the difference between the TiVo HD XL DVR and TiVo Series3 HD DVR seems to me same price but the XL DVR has much more recording capacity….what am I mising?
That’s pretty much the key, but the Series3 also has buttons on the front, and a front panel display. So those options are important to some, and we can certainly bump up the recording capacity to compensate for that.
I have an OLD TiVo that I’ve used continuously since Christmas 1991 (Philips HDR312) that I upgraded some years ago via Weaknees.
I’m interested in replacing it with the new HD XL.
My question: is it possible to transfer my lifetime service from my original TiVo? Last year there was an upgrade deal that I should have jumped on…
If that’s a “yes” I’m ready to order one!
At the moment, no, there is no transfer deal. But that deal cost $199, and getting lifetime service on this is $299 for existing TiVo subscribers, so it’s not so much worse . . .
